This approach applies both for scalar and vectorial waves via the introduction of a suitable Wigner function and can be formulated in terms of an inverted Huygens principle. Coherence is including by allowing the geometrical rays to transport generalized Stokes parameters. The degree of coherence for scalar and vectorial light can be expressed as simple functions of the corresponding Wigner function.

Polarization ray picture of coherence for vectorial electromagnetic waves
We elucidate a ray picture of coherence for vectorial electromagnetic waves by using the Stokes parameters for light rays defined by the optical Wigner function. Paraxial propagation is formulated as a complementary Huygens principle. We show that the degrees of coherence are averages of the phase difference where the weights are the Stokes parameters for light rays. We analyze the van Cittert–...
متن کاملA New Theorem Concerning Scattering of Electromagnetic Waves in Multilayered Metamaterial Spherical Structures
The proposed theorem in this paper is indicative of a kind of duality in the propagation of waves in the dual media of and in the spherical structures. Independent of wave frequency, the number of layers, their thickness, and the type of polarization, this theorem holds true in case of any change in any of these conditions. Theorem: Consider a plane wave incident on a multilayered spheric...
متن کاملCalculation of vectorial diffraction in optical systems.
A vectorial diffraction theory that considers light polarization is essential to predict the performance of optical systems that have a high numerical aperture or use engineered polarization or phase. Vectorial diffraction integrals to describe light diffraction typically require boundary fields on aperture surfaces. Estimating such boundary fields can be challenging in complex systems that ind...
متن کاملDynamical model of coherent circularly polarized optical pulse interactions with two-level quantum systems
We propose and develop a method for theoretical description of circularly elliptically polarized optical pulse resonant coherent interactions with two-level atoms. The method is based on the time-evolution equations of a two-level quantum system in the presence of a time-dependent dipole perturbation for electric dipole transitions between states with total angular-momentum projection differenc...
متن کاملInvestigation and Comparison of Light Propagation in Two Graded Photonic Crystal Structures
In this paper, we study two different Graded Index (GRIN) photonic crystal (PC) structures which are named as structure type I and type II. The PC structures are made of the square rod in an air background. To design a GRIN PC structure the lattice constant has been altered in the direction transverse to propagation. We investigated focusing effect and waveguiding behavior of electr...
